Is my cat sneezing? Find out the possible causes and our tips here!

Just like us, our beloved feline companions sneeze. And this isn’t necessarily due to an infection or a cold. It can be caused by dust or their own fur that has become lodged in their nasal passages. So, to naturally clear a cat’s airways and remove the cause of the blockage, what could be simpler than sneezing? Whether it’s a cold, an allergy, a foreign object, or an illness, there are many causes—but also many solutions. However, it can be more complicated, and you’ll need to distinguish between infectious and non-infectious causes. Let’s take a closer look and find out what the reason might be and, above all, how to remedy it.

Foreign object or nasal infection in cats?

    – As we have just seen, non-infectious causes are most often due to a foreign body or an allergic reaction (pollen, dust). In some older cats, unfortunately, the cause may sometimes be a tumor, such as lymphoma, fibrosarcoma, etc.

    – As for infectious causes, viruses, bacteria, and fungi are the most common culprits. Feline upper respiratory disease is also a common infection in cats that causes inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. It is present in kittens between 6 and 12 weeks of age. Generally, during infections, secondary symptoms may appear, such as a runny nose, red eyes, or fever.

Your cat's veterinarian will make the correct diagnosis

    – The treatment and the steps you need to take will, of course, depend on the underlying cause. If you’re unsure, the simplest thing to do is to visit your veterinarian. They are the only ones qualified to diagnose the cause of the sneezing. In the case of an allergy, for example, they have various options available, such as desensitization, medication, and so on.

    – If a large foreign object is present, surgery may be considered. If a tumor is detected, surgery will also be necessary. Your veterinarian will inform you of the various treatment options available depending on the condition and your pet’s specific circumstances (age, medical history). If the sneezing is infrequent and sporadic over time, there is no need to worry unduly; let your pet handle the situation. Most likely, it is simply a result of their excessive curiosity. In short, they’ve stuck their nose where it doesn’t belong.

Can you predict when your cat is going to sneeze?

It’s virtually impossible to prevent the development of a tumor or the ingestion of a foreign object, especially when your four-legged friend is roaming outdoors and hopping from yard to yard. However, if your cat has feline rhinotracheitis, be sure to isolate it from other cats to prevent the disease from spreading to the rest of the household. Also, remember to clean and disinfect its food bowls regularly.

Finally, consult your veterinarian to have your cat vaccinated against various infections. And don’t forget that providing your cat with a balanced, healthy diet enriched with phytonutrients strengthens the immune system, protects tissues, and reduces inflammation. This also remains the best natural defense against external threats.

And don’t forget that good health always starts with what’s in their bowl, so be generous with Alleva kibble—it’s packed with natural phytonutrients that help boost their immunity!
