Obesity is a disease and a widespread problem among our animal companions. Just consider that the number of dogs and cats with this problem is constantly increasing. Although it is a significant problem that greatly affects the daily lives of our four-legged friends and their owners alike, owners often tend to overlook the issue, failing to realize the risks associated with excessive weight gain. In fact, an obese dog, cat, or any other animal is prone to various consequences that can lead to health issues and diseases even more serious than one might think.

But don’t worry—we’ll provide information on the most common causes of obesity in dogs and cats, along with some tips on how to prevent the problem, with a particular focus on the importance of a healthy diet.

The causes of obesity in our four-legged friends

There can be many different causes of obesity. Among these is breed: in fact, some smaller breeds tend to gain weight more easily, such as Dachshunds or Cocker Spaniels, but medium and large breeds are not exempt from this problem either; in fact, given the greater strain on the joints due to their size, prevention becomes even more important. Age also plays a role. Puppies and younger animals, in fact, never sit still and tend to maintain their ideal weight, while an older dog or cat tends to limit its movement, so obviously more attention must be paid. Furthermore, a very important factor is diet; most dogs and cats tend to eat more than necessary because their owners do not bother to provide them with a specific, balanced diet. In fact, most owners often opt for a rather haphazard diet for their dog or cat, filling their bowl with leftovers from their own meals without considering their four-legged friend’s nutritional and caloric needs.

How to Prevent Obesity in Your Dog and Cat

It’s important to remember that obesity isn’t just a cosmetic issue; excessive weight gain can also have very serious consequences for our pets in the long run.

Here are some tips to help prevent this problem so you won’t have to worry about it in the future.

First of all, it’s important for your pet to get plenty of exercise; staying active will help them burn off the calories they consume and keep them healthy. Another important point is to choose the type and amount of food that’s best for your pet and avoid giving them “treats” between meals.

As we mentioned earlier, you should absolutely avoid giving your dog or cat leftovers from your meal. Finally, we recommend that you consider whether your pet is actually hungry or is just asking for food because it’s bored. If it’s the latter, distract it with play and keep it active!

Any changes to your diet should always be accompanied by anincrease in physical activity. Take your dog for walks or encourage your cat to play.

It will be good for both your weight and your mood.
