Taurine for cats: here's why it's so important
Taurine for cats: Did you know it’s considered an essential nutrient for our four-legged friends?
Unlike other animals, which are able to produce taurine on their own in sufficient quantities, cats require an “external” source. In short, cats can only rely on their diet to meet their adequate taurine requirements.
What is taurine used for in cats?
Taurine is an essential amino acid found in abundance in certain animal tissues. Cats need taurine for the proper functioning of various organs.
Taurine is necessary for the following functions to work properly:
- retina and vision;
- heart and blood circulation;
- reproductive system.
How much taurine should a cat consume?
As we mentioned earlier, cats are unable to produce the amount of taurine they need on their own (unlike other animals). This means that their diet plays a crucial role in the overall well-being of our four-legged friends.
It’s also worth noting that commercially available cat food generally meets their daily nutritional needs, so it’s rare for cats to develop a taurine deficiency. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, however: a cat that has eaten only dog food for a long time or has been on a vegetarian diet is more likely to develop a taurine deficiency.

Taurine deficiency: what are the symptoms?
Let’s start with this premise: if your cat were to develop a taurine deficiency, you wouldn’t notice it right away. That’s because it takes months —and in some cases even years— for the symptoms of taurine deficiency to appear.
Here are some of the main ones:
- developmental delay (if it is a kitten);
- weakened immune system;
- heart problems caused by the development of dilated cardiomyopathy;
- fertility issues;
- developmental delay (if it is a kitten);
- irreversible degeneration of the retina;
- tendency toward aggression and nervousness.
