What is taurine used for in cats?

Taurine is an essential amino acid found in abundance in certain animal tissues. Cats need taurine for the proper functioning of various organs.

How much taurine should a cat consume? 

As we mentioned earlier, cats are unable to produce the amount of taurine they need on their own (unlike other animals). This means that their diet plays a crucial role in the overall well-being of our four-legged friends. 

It’s also worth noting that commercially available cat food generally meets their daily nutritional needs, so it’s rare for cats to develop a taurine deficiency. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, however: a cat that has eaten only dog food for a long time or has been on a vegetarian diet is more likely to develop a taurine deficiency.

Taurine deficiency: what are the symptoms?

• irreversible degeneration of the retina;
• tendency toward aggression and nervousness.
