    Traveling with a cat by car

    Is traveling with a cat impossible? Absolutely not!

    Although cats aren’t particularly fond of traveling, there are certain situations in which they simply have to go on a trip, such as when you’re going on vacation or to the vet

    Most of your trips with your cat probably won’t be long, but even a short trip can be stressful for your cat

    So what can you do to make the trip as comfortable as possible?

    In this article, you’ll find helpful tips for making travel with your cat a pleasant and stress-free experience (for both of you).

    How to handle a car trip with your cat? Things to know before you leave

    The first thing to keep in mind is that a trip (or even a short ride) can be a very stressful experience for your cat. They won’t like the car’s movements or the noise, or being away from home.

    Fortunately, there are several ways to keep your pet calm during long trips, whether you’re traveling by car, train, or other means.

    So, how do you travel with a cat?

    Let's take a look at it together!

    Traveling with a Cat by Car: The Importance of Getting Them Used to It Gradually

    To make the trip less stressful, it can be very helpful to gradually get your cat used to car rides. Here are a few tips on how to do that:

    • Make sure your cat gets used to using the carrier well in advance. One of the best ways to do this is to leave the carrier door open in your home, perhaps with a blanket or a toy inside. This will encourage your cat to explore the carrier at its own pace;
    • When you're in the car, and if your cat doesn't get car sick, give them some treats so they can associate car rides with a positive experience;
    • Get your cat used to the sound of the engine so that it gradually becomes familiar to them.

    Another important tip is to avoid feeding your cat right before you leave. Also, be sure to pack some water for your cat, especially if you’re going on a long trip.

    RememberRemember: how long your cat can handle a car ride depends on how comfortable it is with the car and its stress level.

    How do you handle a train trip with your cat?

    Can I bring my cat on the train?

    Absolutely, but it's important to follow certain rules and take some precautions

    First of all, your cat may only travel by train inside a designated carrier. The carrier must be placed either right next to your seat or in the luggage racks. In addition, only one carrier is allowed per passenger.

    To make the train ride less stressful, we also recommend bringing some water and… their favorite snacks!

    Are there any required documents I need to bring with me when traveling with cats on a train?

    Make sure you always have all the necessary documents for your cat with you (such as a health certificate, if required by the railway company), in case they are requested during your trip.

    Going on vacation with your cat? Keep these things in mind

    If you take your cat on vacation, you need to make sure your cat has everything it needs —not only during the trip, but also for the entire stay at your final destination.

    As we’ve seen, your cat will need water during the trip. If it’s a long trip, he’ll also need to eat and stretch his legs a bit (always inside the car).

    Be sure to take regular breaks during the trip. However, we recommend that you always bring clean liners for the carrier so you’re prepared for any minor mishaps that might occur.

    Once you arrive at your destination, your cat will need all the things it usually has at home: litter, a bed, a scratching post, and food. Remember to bring all of these with you!

    RememberRemember: when you arrive, don’t worry if your cat seems nervous and doesn’t have much of an appetite. They might be a little agitated or feeling a bit queasy from the trip.

    Taking your cat on a car or train trip means you have to think about a lot of things, but the better you prepare, the more stress-free the journey will be for your cat (and you’ll be more relaxed too)!
